ec 2 00 3 SYMMETRIC FUNCTIONS AND THE PHASE PROBLEM IN CRYSTALLOGRAPHY

چکیده
The calculation of crystal structure from X-ray diffraction data requires that the phases of the " structure factors " (Fourier coefficients) determined by scattering be deduced from the absolute values of those structure factors. Motivated by a question of Herbert Hauptman, we consider the problem of determining phases by direct algebraic means in the case of crystal structures with n equal atoms in the unit cell, with n small. We rephrase the problem as a question about multiplicative in-variants for a particular finite group action. We show that the absolute values form a generating set for the field of invariants of this action, and consider the problem of making this theorem constructive and practical; the most promising approach for deriving explicit formulas uses SAGBI bases.

Single Facility Goal Location Problems with Symmetric and Asymmetric Penalty Functions
Location theory is an interstice field of optimization and operations research. In the classic location models, the goal is finding the location of one or more facilities such that some criteria such as transportation cost, the sum of distances passed by clients, total service time, and cost of servicing are minimized. The goal Weber location problem is a special case of location mode...

We construct a generalization of the theory of symmetric functions involving functions of commuting and anticommuting (Grassmannian) variables. These new functions , called symmetric functions in superspace, are invariant under the diagonal action of the symmetric group acting on the sets of commuting and anticommuting variables. We first obtain superspace analogues of a number of standard obje...

A classical theorem of Boas, Kac, and Krein states that a characteristic function φ with φ(x) = 0 for |x| ≥ τ admits a representation of the form φ(x) = ∫ u(y)u(y + x) dy, x ∈ R, where the convolution root u ∈ L2(R) is complex-valued with u(x) = 0 for |x| ≥ τ/2. The result can be expressed equivalently as a factorization theorem for entire functions of finite exponential type. This paper examin...

Furthermore, we de ne a new pro...
